Founding

Vancouver Whitecaps F.C. is a Canadian professional football team based in Vancouver, British Columbia. They play in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a club that is a member of the league’s Western Conference. They were formed on March 18, 2009, and began playing in 2011 as the 17th team to join Major League Soccer, replacing the USSF Division 2 team of the same name in the city. The club has been owned and managed by the same group since their USSF days, following the move to the MLS following the 2010 USSF season. The MLS version of the team is a phoenix club, and the third to bear the name Whitecaps. In the 2012 season, the team became the first Canadian team to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
