Heerenveen

Founding

The club sc Heerenveen was founded on July 20, 1920 under the name Athleta. In the 1921/22 season the name was changed to Spartan. When the club joined the competition of the Dutch Football Association about a year later, it was given the name VV Heerenveen, because there were already other clubs that played under the name (De) Spartaan. After splitting into divisions for amateur and professional football, the name of the club changed to sc Heerenveen on 1 June 1977.

Prizes

In 2009 Heerenveen won the KNVB Cup. This was the first and only prize that the club won at the highest Dutch level. Heerenveen’s highlight was participation in the Champions League in 2000/2001.
